Although the rain predicted for Friday evening was held at bay, the Linn County Relay for Life had a shoulder to shoulder crowd and heart after heart of giving.
The 12th Annual Relay for Life started promptly at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening, held at the Park Baptist Church Fellowship Hall as a precautionary measure against the unstable weather. With 16 Relay Teams participating this year, Chase Batye, Chairman of the Relay was proud to announce this morning to the Linn County Leader, the total amount raised was $48,937.02.
The winning Relay for Life Team was the Linn County R-4 Apple Corps, Meadville, who raised $5,848.11 for the American Cancer Society which sponsors the Relay for Life event.
Mike Carr, the 2009 American Cancer Society Hero of Hope was on hand to tell his story of courage and tenacity that inspired all attending the Relay.
Neither the heat or humidity wilted the Mrs. Grandma Contest. Connie King, St. Catharine, was crowned Mrs. Grandma during the Relay. Trinity United Methodist Church sponsored Rev. Mike White as the “Holy Ghost Buster” Super Hero who won the Super Hero Contest with a donation collected during the evening of $270.52.
The Luminary Ceremony was especially touching with over 600 lighted luminary bags arranged in an oval in the center of the Park Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Hundreds of people surrounded the luminaries, holding hands and remembering loved ones who had succumbed to cancer.
