The 2012 Marceline Tiger Hoops basketball tournament is a thing of the recent past. For the hosting teams, as well as a pair of area squads, the event resulted in some new hardware for their trophy cases.
The Macon County Lady Raiders played on Friday night against Brunswick for Consolation, and brought home the hardware with a 40-38 win in an exciting contest.
The Macon County Raiders played Brunswick for the Consolation trophy as well, and won in a blowout, 73-48.
The Marceline Lady Tigers played Bevier on Saturday for third place. A three-pointer by Kendra Gladbach started things off well for Marceline. A pair of early 4-0 runs would give the Lady Tigers some breathing room early. After one quarter, Marceline led 23-11.
Bevier started the second quarter off with a coast-to-coast layup, but a put-back by Jenny Hand answered for Marceline. The Lady Tigers shooting went a little cold in the midpoint of the frame, but a late quarter hot streak kept the Marceline lead at double digits. At halftime, Marceline led 39-23.
The Marceline Tigers played against the always-tough, and State-ranked Glasgow Yellowjackets in the Boys Championship game to bring the tournament to a close.
The teams were evenly matched early in the game, feeling each other out like a pair of heavyweight prize fighters looking for an opening. At the 4:52 mark, Brennen Floray put through a free throw to start scoring. Glasgow responded with a 7-0 run, ending with a pair of free throws by Brett McGlothlin at the 1:10 mark. Nathan Weimer put in the first field goal of the game for Marceline with 44 seconds left in the opening frame. After one quarter, the Tigers trailed 11-5.
McGlothlin opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, and Marceline added one more to go on a minute-long 4-0 run. The teams fought back and forth, but a Glasgow buzzer-beater on a put-back extended Marceline’s halftime deficit to eight, and a score of 29-21.
