Rev. Father Philip Moriarty, 60, current pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church, Wien, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Lenior Woods Health Center, Columbia.
The concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Wien, with Bishop John R. Gaydos officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today, June 22, 2009, at the church with prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Wien.

Father Moriarty was born July 9, 1948, in St. Louis, son of Martin J. and Clementine C. (Lampe) Moriarty.
Father Moriarty attended the Epiphany of Our Lord Elementary School from 1953-1962 and St. John the Baptist High School from 1962-1966, both in St. Louis. He then attended the University of Missouri-St. Louis from 1966-1970 receiving a B.A. degree in English. While in St. Louis he worked for KETC-TV Channel 9 and was an usher at the old Busch Stadium. He also received training in radio broadcasting attaining a Third Class Operators License and worked as an announcer at KQCA Radio Station, Canton. He began studies for the Holy Priesthood in 1975 when he entered Conception Seminary College, Conception, for his philosophy studies. He completed his theology program at Kenrick Seminary, St. Louis, from 1976-1980. Father Moriarty was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on May 17, 1980, at St. Peter Church, Jefferson City, by Bishop Michael F. McAuliffe. His first assignment was as Assistant Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Columbia, on June 27, 1980. He was then appointed Pastor of St. John Church, Memphis and the Schuyler Catholic Community, Lancaster, on August 1, 1984. He held the position of Senator of the Brookfield Deanery from May 1998 to October 1, 2001. He was appointed Pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church, Wien, and Immaculate Conception Mass Station, Hamden, August 15, 1990, where he remained until his death. He celebrated his Silver Jubilee of Ordination on May 29, 2005, at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Wien.
Survivors include four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Michael F. and Anne Moriarty, Byron, Minn., and Patrick C. and Sue Moriarty, John J. Moriarty and Gerald D. Moriarty, St. Louis; three sisters, Clementine and Martine J. Moriarty, St. Louis, and Mary C. Moriarty, Union; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father on January 18, 1978, and his mother on September 13, 2006.
