Missouri state football tournaments are in full swing, and with Friday night's results, the seasons of roughly half the teams in the state have come to a close.
On the Class 1 side, there was only one upset in the opening round of district play that was not a five seed over a four seed. Sixth-seeded Putnam County defeated three-seed Gallatin in District 8, and will travel to Hamilton to face defending champion Penney on Friday. On the opposite side of Marceline's District 6 bracket, second and third seeds Fayette and Westran will rematch a week five game which Fayette won 38-29. Should Marceline defeat Santa Fe on Friday night, it will face the winner of that matchup.
Monroe City, reigning state runner-up and Marceline's demise in last year's quarterfinal game, stomped Louisiana 62-6 last week and faces Mark Twain in the District 5 semifinal. Should Monroe City win, it will face the winner of the two-three South Shelby - Scotland County matchup.
In Class 2 District 8 play, Lafayette County, who vanquished the Brookfield side on Friday in a well-played game, will face five-seed Lawson on Friday night. Lawson stomped Bishop LeBlond 36-6 on the road last week. On the opposite side of the bracket, second-seeded Lexington defeated Carrollton 49-21 and three-seed Lathrop beat Trenton 41-15. The District 8 champion will most likely play the winner of University Academy Charter (Kansas City) and Summit Christian Academy (Lee's Summit), the two strongest teams in a very mediocre District 7, in the state quarterfinal.
There were two six-over-three upsets in Class 2 play on Friday night. Versailles defeated El Dorado Springs 34-29 in District 4 and East Prairie defeated Jefferson (Festus) 36-21 in District 1.
It is worth noting that across Classes 1-4 and Class 6 (Class 5 only played what were essentially play-in games on Friday), Brookfield's 30-13 loss to Lafayette County was the third-closest one-versus-eight game in the state. In Class 1, top-seeded East Buchanan defeated Mid-Buchanan 34-20, and in Class 6, it took a pair of overtimes for one-seed Lee's Summit West to defeat Raymore-Peculiar 37-30.
