The Van Horn girls soccer team got off to a strong start in the Kansas City Cup.
Gloria Guerrero put on a show as she scored four of Van Horn’s nine goals in Tuesday’s 9-0 win against Kansas City Central in the Falcons’ first pool play game of the tournament.
Tatiana Stickle, Karen Carrete, Alazha Butler, Adi Smith and Deja Lamb each scored one goal for the Falcons, who improved to 8-7 overall.
The Falcons meet Lone Jack at 7 p.m. today at Van Horn in their second game in pool play.
LEE’S SUMMIT WEST 2, BLUE SPRINGS SOUTH 1: Blue Springs South had a halftime lead on undefeated and state No. 1-ranked Lee’s Summit West but couldn’t hold on for a Suburban Big Seven win Tuesday at South.
Brie Severns scored her 23rd goal of the season in the 11th minute to put the Jaguars ahead. It was only the fourth goal Lee’s Summit West had allowed all season.
South held off the Titans (12-0, 8-0 Big Seven) until a goal in the 50th minute tied it. West won it on a late penalty kick after a handball call on the Jaguars (11-5, 4-3).
“I'm very proud of (our) effort tonight,” Jaguars coach Todd Findley said. “The last time we played, we lost 3-0. The system of play worked well tonight because the girls carried it out perfectly. Their dedication to the plan and to the team is amazing.”
