Brookfield freshmen Alesa Frey is just a step behind the pitch as it flies into the glove of Marceline catcher Cierra Nelson. The youngsters, who are the future of both softball programs, battled in a doubleheader last night at Rusk Park.

Last night at Rusk Park the first official shots of the 2010 Highway 36 Rivalry were fired, as the Brookfield Lady Dogs hosted the Marceline Lady Tigers in a JV softball doubleheader.  The home team swept both games, in what was a learning experience for the future stars of our local softball diamonds.

Game One - Marceline 1  Brookfield 8
The Lady Tigers offense struggled in the top of the first as Hannah Dorrell and Cierra Nelson’s two-out singles were the bright spots for the visiting team.  In a case of polar opposites, though, the home team’s offense came to life in the bottom of the frame.
Alesa Frey led off with a single, Sydney Thompson walked, Paige Clawson slugged an RBI single, Laura Baum was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.
A series of passed balls while Lauren Roberts was at-bat cleared the bases, and extended the Brookfield lead to 4-0.  Katie Turner earned a two-out walk, and would come around to score on another series of passed balls to make the score 5-0.
Kayla McClintick was hit by a pitch, Frey came back to the bat and nailed an RBI single.  Thompson walked to re-load the bases, but all were left stranded, and the score was 6-0 in favor of the Lady Dogs.

Game Two - Marceline 2  Brookfield 14
In the nightcap, Madison McCormick pitched for Marceline, while Thompson hurled for Brookfield.
Brookfield scored four runs in the first, one in the second, five in the third, and four in the fourth.
Marceline scored their runs in the third and fourth innings respectively.
