Meadville Teams Advance, Linn County’s Season Ends

A pair of Linn County area basketball teams met in semifinal action last night in the Class One, District 12 basketball tournament.  The Linn County basketball program is hosting this week, and took on Meadville’s program Wednesday night.

In the girls game, the Lady Eagles held the Lady Mustangs scoreless in the first quarter.  Meadville led 8-0 after one quarter, with Kayla Smith scoring four points for the Lady Eagles.  In the second quarter, Linn County got on the board, with Meagan Nickell scoring five of the team’s seven points.  At halftime, Meadville led 21-7.  Kellie Sargent had eight points to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring.  In the third quarter, Meadville outscored Linn County 19-6, and extended their lead to 40-13.  For the Lady Mustangs:  Nickell, Shelby Russell, and Kassandra Harrington each scored two points.  For the Lady Eagles, Kaylen Holcer had eight points, with a pair of three-pointers.  In the end, Meadville advances with a 51-15 win.

In the boys game, the Mustangs and Eagles played close early.  After one quarter, the game was tied 9-9.  Devon O’Kane had three points to lead Linn County’s scoring.  Willie Howe had four points in the frame for Meadville.  Meadville rallied in the second quarter to take an 11 point halftime lead, 33-22.  Tanner Baker had 11 points for the Eagles in the second quarter, nine of these points coming from beyond the three-point arc.  Brandon Montgomery had five points for the Mustangs in the frame.  Linn County was held to nine points in the third quarter, allowing Meadville to take command of this game 57-31.  O’Kane had five points in the third quarter to lead scoring for the Mustangs, while Cody Smith had nine points for the Eagles.  The Meadville Eagles move on to the District Championship, and remain undefeated on the season, with a 70-44 win.
