The Brookfield Bulldogs opened their 2010 season Friday night with a win against Clarence Cannon Conference opponent Mark Twain at Burlington Field. The Dogs moved the ball well through the air, as well as on the ground. This balanced attack earned Brookfield a 24-0 win to start the season off on the right foot.
Brookfield’s Mike McCollum kicked the ball off, and thanks to a second down sack from Gavin Head, Mark Twain was forced into a three-and-out. Brookfield took over on the Mark Twain 38 yard line for their first drive of the season.
Runs from Byron Clayton and Andrew Baum set up a pass from quarterback Gary Lindsay to McCollum on third down. Lindsay would find Levi Henderson a play later to give the Dogs a fresh set of downs at the Mark Twain nine-yard-line. It was here that the drive stalled, and a fourth and goal pass to Baum was ruled down at the one-yard-line to send Brookfield back to the sidelines.
The teams exchanged possessions in their next drives. Baum returned a punt 81-yards to give the Dogs great field position at the Mark Twin 14 yard line near the end of the first quarter. A pass to Henderson got the ball to the three-yard-line, where Clayton punched it in for the first touchdown of the season. Josh Torrez put the point-after through to give Brookfield a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Mark Twain again went three-and-out on their next drive. This was thanks, in part, to a tipped halfback pass by McCollum on third down. Baum returned the punt to his own 41 to start the next Brookfield drive.
Lindsay and Baum combined to earn the Dogs a first down on three runs. A pass from Lindsay to Matt O’Toole got the Dogs into the Mark Twain red zone at the 15 yard line. A pair of runs by Lindsay got the ball to the three yard line, where Jordan Bradley ran it into the end zone. The point-after was blocked, leaving Brookfield with a 13-0 lead.
Q2 4:48 – Mark Twain 0 Brookfield 13
Mark Twain would earn their first fresh set of downs in the contest on the ensuing drive, but would still punt the ball back to Brookfield late in the first half. Runs by Clayton, Lindsay, Bradley, and McCollum would earn the Dogs a first down at the Brookfield 43. A pair of passes to McCollum set up the last-second Hail Mary, which was received by O’Toole at the Mark Twain one-yard-line to end the first half.
