The annual rivalry game between Linn County R-1 and Meadville played out on the court at Meadville High School last night. The Eagles and Lady Eagles tied one on against the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs, with Meadville winning both games.
In the girls game, Beth Crosser scored first for Meadville, and Linn County tied the game over a minute later at 2-2. Meadville went on a 5-0 run at around the five minute mark, but Linn County drew back into the contest with a 3-0 run of their own. But it would be the Lady Eagles outside shooting, from the hands of Kaylen Holcer, that would make the early difference in this contest. After one quarter, Meadville led Linn County 22-8, with a buzzer-beater for three by Erin Shiflett.
Both teams started the second quarter with a turnover problem, and the first points of the frame came from a Maci Hullinger free throw for Linn County. Meadville responded with a beginning hoop from Sara VanDyke, and a 7-0 run in the fisrt three minutes. Kassie Harrington ended the run with a hoop for the Lady Mustangs. At halftime, Meadville led Linn County 36-13.
In the boys game, the teams were physical with each other all night in this exciting contest. The Mustangs scored the game’s first points just south of the 7:00 mark, and these were the only points for the first two minutes of the game. Meadville was cold early on from the floor, and struggled a bit through the game. A hoop by Josh Allen made the opening run for Linn County 4-0, which ended with a Derek Smith basket at the 5:12 mark.
