The Marceline Lady Tigers JV and Varsity softball teams did battle with Milan at Lion’s Field last night, dodging the rain storms that have soaked the area. The JV was shut out 7-0, but the Varsity won in the nightcap.
In the JV contest, the Lady Tigers offense was provided by Samantha Wright, who had a single and a walk; Hannah Dorrell, who had a walk; and Molly Meissen, who had a double.
Milan went down in order in the top of the first. Abby Gauthier hit a bunt single, Natalie Wheeler and Madison McCormick were both hit by a pitch, and loaded the bases. Alyson Ewigman brought two runs in with two outs, thanks to a single. Brittany Wright hit a single to bring in two more runs.
“It feels awesome to be off to such a good start,” said Wright post-game. “The team did well last season, but we seem to be more in tune with each other this season.” Marceline was up 4-0 after one inning.
Milan earned two infield singles, but did not score in five at-bats in the top of the second. Cierra Nelson, Gauthier, and Wheeler all walked for the Lady Tigers to load the bases. Nelson scored off of a Fielder’s Choice by Madison McCormick. After two innings, Marceline was up 5-0.
Milan managed another infield single, but was again held scoreless thanks to the pitching effort of Taylor Enyeart. Alyson Ewigman legged out a bunt single and stole two bases, a sacrifice from Brittany Wright allowed Alyson to score. Also in this inning, Morgan McCormick singled, and Nelson walked. After three innings, the Lady Tigers were up 6-0.
Milan sent their entire lineup to the plate in the fourth inning, and scored three runs. Wheeler walked, but was caught in a double play. Lauren Ewigman doubled to the left-center field fence. Sydnee Brooks came on as a pinch runner, and scored off of a single by Alyson Ewigman. Wright walked, Kallie Hilsabeck walked, but both were stranded. After four innings, Marceline led 7-3.
