Walt Disney Elementary’s mock mail service is a  teaching tool.  One of the main objectives of the postal service is to provide children (K-5) real-life experiences such as reading, writing, and addressing envelopes.
Fifth graders may apply and take a postal exam for positions of postmaster, letter carriers, facers, cancellers, nixie clerks, and sorters.  Employees of the postal system work each morning prior to the start of school.  The program is in operation throughout the month of February.
The Disney theme is used throughout.  The elementary is divided into five cities.  Each classroom has a street name and each student has a street number.  Students can look up the address of any person in the elementary building in the directory located in each classroom.
Student letters are mailed in the classroom mailboxes or dropped in the central post office box.  The carriers pick up the mail each morning and bring it to the mail room.  The letters are then canceled, addresses checked, and sorted by city and street addresses.  Once through with this process, it’s ready to be delivered.  If not properly addressed, it’s returned to sender.
