For Missouri hunters and trappers there’s always a “down time” between the end of a year’s hunting and trapping seasons and the beginning of another year’s. That time is coming up real soon, as the ending of rabbit and squirrel seasons for 2021-22 is Monday (Feb. 15) and trapping seasons are partly closed, with only otter and muskrat seasons still open until next weekend (Feb. 20), and beaver and nutria seasons closing on March 31.

Riley Howell, right, also earned a district championship, prevailing at 159 pounds. The third Lady Bulldog headed to the Feb. 17-19 state tourney at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s Mizzou Arena is Mya Sackrey, who captured third place at 130 pounds by winning her last four bouts after a championship-quarterfinals loss. Jackson heads to state with a 28-1 record, Howell a 34-4 mark, and Sackrey at 27-5. The closing stretch of the 2021-22 high school basketball season for Marceline’s and Brookfield’s varsity squads continued to be a challenging one this past Tuesday. All four teams sustained double-digits losses in conference contests – BHS at South Shelby and MHS at Salisbury – that extended their lean harvest from the final month of the regular season.
The Missouri Feral Hog Elimination Partnership (the Partnership) removed 9,857 feral hogs from the landscape in 2021, making the total number of feral hogs eliminated more than 54,000 since 2016. The Partnership is made up of 13 federal and state agencies along with numerous agriculture and conservations organizations.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a free Prescribed Burning for Missouri Land Managers workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Poosey Conservation Area in Livingston County. This workshop will teach the skills and techniques to safely and effectively use prescribed burns as a habitat or forage management tool.
