2021-22 Brookfield Wrestling Standouts Honored

Members of Brookfield High School’s highly-successful 2021-22 wrestling teams were recognized and honored at the school’s annual winter sports banquet and program March 8. The Bulldogs posted a 12-4 record in dual matches and then claimed third place in the Class 1 state tournament, producing a pair of individual state champions and three other medal-winners out of seven total qualifiers. The Lady Bulldogs were a perfect 13-0 in dual matches, a first in the program’s 4-years history, and had three members qualify for state competition – two of whom medaled. At the awards event, BHS wrestling head coach Drew Passley announced four special awards for each gender’s team with some individuals getting multiple recognition. Those special award recipients include, from left: Front – Lady Tiger freshman state medalist Riley Howell (Rookie of the Year and Bulldog awards), Lady Tigers freshman state qualifier Mya Sackrey (Most Improved), and senior state medal-winner Oscarina Jackson Berman (Most Outstanding). Back – Tigers freshman state champion Peyton Parn (Rookie of the Year), senior state champion Jaden Abongo (Most Outstanding and Bulldog awards), and sophomore Xavier Sada (Most Improved). Jackson also was noted as the first BHS girl to compete in the sport for four seasons, during which time she compiled 78-17 record and twice advanced to state. Passley also shared with the crowd in attendance at the banquet/program that five BHS wrestlers earned Academic All-State status from the state’s wrestling coaches association by having at least a 3.5 grade-point average and winning a state medal. Those were Colton, Devan and Peyton Parn, Berman, and Howell. (Paul Sturm/LCL PHOTO)
