Two Missouri state records for largest fish were broken just three days apart in mid-March this year. Even though Missouri has some pretty big fish in the state record book, the records continue to be replaced by even-bigger ones.
Missouri is blessed to have a variety of stunning landscapes to explore. From forests and woodlands to waterfalls and wetlands – there’s something for everyone. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages you to get outside and explore all the state has to offer during the month of April.
Throughout the country, an extremely infectious disease called highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been circulating rapidly among flocks of chicken and turkeys. While the disease poses little risk to humans, it presents a serious threat to infected birds as well as the nation’s poultry industry, which is already facing supply chain disruptions.
In a major milestone, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced at a press conference that the Attorney General’s Office has worked with 169 law enforcement agencies to clear their backlogs of untested, report sexual assault kits. In total, 3,298 untested, reported kits have been sent to the lab to be tested. Further, because of the work of the SAFE Kit Initiative State Coordinator Judge M. Keithley Williams and her team, there are currently three active prosecutions that are a direct result of CODIS hits from kits that were tested through the SAFE Kit Initiative.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is urging drivers to keep a cautious eye on the road this spring and give turtles a brake! Many species of Missouri’s turtles become more active during the spring as they emerge from their burrows and cross the roads in search of food and a mate.

Recently, Jada Taylor and Dane Phillips were named Marceline Middle and High School Students of the Week. Taylor’s activities include golf, FFA, marching band, Drama Club, and FBLA. In her spare time she enjoys showing her dog, Finn, in 4-H and spending time with friends and family. Phillips’ activities include football, wrestling, baseball, and golf. In his spare time he enjoys being at the lake doing water sports and spending time with friends and family.
China Garden Buffet, 1023 S. Washington St., burnt on Tuesday, April 5 and the building is now considered a total loss.
Laurie Burbank and Bob McCollum of Linn County were honored with a 2021 Frank Graham 4-H Volunteer Leadership Award by the 4-H Center for Youth Development in March. Laurie and Bob are two of 60 volunteers recognized statewide for commitment and leadership to the University of Missouri Extension 4-H Youth Development program.
