Wright Funeral Home Celebrates 75 Years

In the early 1930s Sumner native Harold Bell Wright was working for a local businessman who had plans of opening a funeral home in Sumner. Wright then saved money to attend mortuary school in St. Louis. In 1932 he graduated from Hohenschuh-Carpenter College of Embalming before returning to Sumner. In the midst of the Great Depression that businessman was unable to open the funeral home. In 1934, following the death of M.Y. Rusk, his wife, Augusta Rusk, called Wright and he soon began working for Rusk Funeral Home and then in 1927 Harold and Elisabeth Wright bought Rusk Funeral Home and changed the name to Wright Funeral Home.

Teach Children To Save Day

Regional Missouri Bank recently participated in the American Banking Associations 25th annual Teach Children to Save Day by visiting second grade classrooms at Walt Disney Elementary and Father McCartan Memorial School in Marceline.

Brookfield High School Class Of 2022

Brookfield Class of 2022 graduated during a ceremony held on Sunday, May 22 in the high school gym. Students recognized with Top 10 % Acadmic Achievement included: Alayna Arnold, Carly Clarkson, Mitchell Day, Ryan McIntyre, Trent Polly, Scarlet Polson and Alex Sharp. Alex Sharp was named Valedictorian and Alayna Arnold was Salutatorian.

Georgie I. Burstert

Georgie I. Burstert, age 88 of Brookfield, formerly of the Wien area, died Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Life Care Center of Brookfield. Georgie was born in Bucklin, Missouri on December 9, 1933 to John and Cecil (Teeter) Wolfskill. She married Orville Burstert on October 2, 1954 and he preceded her in death.

Linn County State Meet Standouts

In the final act of her stellar Brookfield High School distance-running career, recent BHS graduate “Alex” Sharp stands on the MSHSAA Class 2 State Track-and-Field Championships medals stand wearing the medal she’s just received for her fourth-place in the 3,200-meters run last Saturday (May 21). The medal was the ninth state-meet medal in Sharp’s three seasons of high school track competition (her would-be sophomore year was canceled during the COVID-19 pandemic). The Tulane University-bound BHS standout was a 2-times state champion in both track and cross-country running.
