Mudcats Stay Stuck In Mud In July Debut Saturday

Having stabilized from a snail-paced start to their season, the 2022 Chillicothe Mudcats college-level, woodbat baseball team turned the calendar page from its opening month to its closing one during an open date last Friday, understanding there was an urgent need for it to begin stringing successes together in order to gain traction in its pursuit of one of the three North Division berth for the late-July MINK League playoffs.

Celebrating In Tradition

Hundreds came to Ripley Park in downtown Marceline between June 30-July 4 to take part in an annual July 4 tradition-the Marceline Carnival - which featured a variety of rides, games and food for people of all ages. Bands also performed nightly along with bongo sponsored by the VFW, Rotary funnel cakes and the Firefighter's Food Stand.

Brookfield VFW Patriot Pen Winner

Lucy Kjos, a Linn County Home Schooler, won the Brookfield General John J Pershing Post 4557 Patriot Pen Essay Contest. On May 17, at the Brookfield VFW hall, Kjos read her winning essay, "My Pledge to Our Veterans." The essay contest encourages youth to examine American history along with their own experiences by drafting a 300-400 word essay. VFW Quartermaster Joe Pointon, Commander Rodney Burch, and Auxiliary Officer Barbara Pointon and pictured presenting Patriot Pen winner Lucu Kjos a check and certificate.
