125 years ago, June 1897, 20 Black Buffalo Soldiers left Missoula, Montana riding bicycles arriving at St. Louis, Missouri 41 days (1,900 miles) later. The bicycle was a new invention and the United States Army wanted to test if the bicycle could be a practical weapon of war. The Buffalo Soldiers nicknamed the Iron Riders proved the bicycle could move further and quicker than cavalry or infantry.
