Linn County Area Career and Technical Center (LCACTC) has been awarded a $400,000 grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. “It is the largest grant specifically targeted for career and technical education we have received. The funds come from part of the federal funding the state of Missouri has received over the past couple of years. Governor Parson has expressed a real commitment to career and technical education and has demonstrated that with this funding opportunity. This grant will greatly enhance our LCACTC and provide even more opportunities for our Brookfield R-III students and the Linn County sending school students we serve,” said Brookfield R-III Superintendent Kyle Collins.

MARCELINE — For a day at least, the historically-strong Brookfield High School boys’ wrestling team took a back seat to the still-fledgling Lady Tigers last Saturday. Debuting for the 2022-23 season in the Tiger Mat Classic at neighboring Marceline, the BHS girls had three individual champions plus four runnersup, while the boys came up empty on individual crowns, settling instead for four seconds and three thirds.

Congetta Frances Ferraro Harris “Connie”, 95, of Marceline, MO, and former lifelong resident of Columbus Park in Kansas City, MO, passed away November 28, 2022, in Marceline. Congetta was born April 5, 1927 in Kansas City, MO, one of four children of Gaetano Ferraro and Fortunata Sirna Ferraro.
Richard J. “Rick” Freeman, 67, of Liberty, Missouri, formerly of Marceline, died Friday, December 2, 2022, at North Care Hospice House in Kansas City. Rick was born in Marceline on November 4, 1955, to Clifford Locke and Sharon Jane (Barnes) Freeman. He married Martha Raylene Coffman on May 14th, 1982, in a small country church just outside Callao, Missouri. Rick attended Father McCartan Memorial School, and graduated Marceline High School, and the University of Central Missouri. A Linn County Deputy for over 9 years, and Sheriff for 10, Rick continued working closely with law enforcement throughout his career, most recently with Lexipol software training as a Sales Development Representative. Rick was a faithful member of Liberty United Methodist Church and always strived to actively reflect the spirit of and embody the love of Christ in his interactions with the public, colleagues, friends, and family. It was his deep desire to represent his deep faith in word and deed. He is survived by his wife Raylene; daughter Thera Freeman and wife Jane Chase Wells of Snowmass, Colorado; brother Kerry Freeman and wife Lauraine Garten-Freeman of Brookfield; sister Jennie Crowell of Catoosa, Oklahoma; and Cayrol Coffman, his beloved mother in-law. Rick is also survived by many loving members of his extended family and friends who are like family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Clay. A memorial service is being planned for Friday, December 9th at Liberty United Methodist Church, Liberty, Missouri, followed by interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Marceline, MO. Joanie Byrd, age, 73, of Brookfield, passed away, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at her home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at 1:00 p.m.

James Garrett Thorne, DVM, PhD, MPVM, passed away on November 21, 2022, surrounded by his wife of 64 years and family at his home in Columbia, Missouri. He was born February 22, 1937, the son of Oscar Alexander Thorne and Mattie Frances Thorne, of Purdin, Missouri.
