Four outstanding Class 1 high school basketball players from Linn County or neighboring teams have been accorded All-State status for the 2022-23 season by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association, the organization announced at mid-week last week. Of the four, only one is a senior this school year – Hayden Harms of Mendon: Northwestern.
On April 4 voters within the Marceline R-V School District will be asked to vote for three, three year terms on the board. Those running for those seats include incumbents Toni Sportsman, Josh Moore and Walter Heller, along with Chelsea Niemeier and Landon Teeter.
COLUMBIA — Although the weather has been generally uncooperative for competition in the nearly two weeks since Missouri high school spring sports teams were permitted to start having games, matches and meets, both Marceline and Brookfield high school’s boys’ golf teams were able to get one tournament under their belts last week. On Monday, March 20, both participated in the Father Tolton Regional Invitational tournament at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia with sharply-contrasting results.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has set several of the 2023 fall hunting seasons and most of them are pretty much the same as last year’s. Black bear and elk seasons have a limited number of permits available and these can be applied for in May.
As the new Major League Baseball season dawns at home for the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow afternoon, as it looks like the weather will allow, it finds them in familiar, if dissimilar, situations.
Although the weather turned more sports-friendly at the start of this week, the first nine potential days of spring sports action for Marceline’s and Brookfield’s high school teams generated far more postponements and/or cancellations than they did competition.
Mother Nature was nearly batting 1.000 against Linn County’s high school baseball teams entering this week, allowing only one of about a dozen slated games to occur in the first nine playing dates of the 2023 season. The exception to the inclement weather and too-soggy field conditions was the Marceline Tigers’ home game against Glasgow last Friday, which the hosts dropped, 12-3.
On the backroads is where history was made. History is the Oregon Trail, pioneers, Indigenous peoples, the railroads, Route 66. It’s the folks who came out west and formed small towns, fought through the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. We know a lot about the Oregon Trail, but we don’t know what came out of it, what towns, inventions, buildings, and so on. We know of history. Rural history is too often untold, much of it forgotten, because it’s rural America and most people seem to assume nothing happens or happened in rural America. But the communities are where important history was made yet forgotten to most.
