Linn County Sheriff’s Department hosts the 1st Pee Wee Polar Plunge

Not even the bitter cold winds of winter’s last hurrah could dampen the spirits of those attending the 1st Annual Pee Wee Polar Plunge held at Ripley Park in Marceline last Saturday. Six plungers — five children and one adult —participated in this year’s event, raising $325 was raised for Special Olympics Missouri. All participants were ready to have fun during the event.

Wilma Jean (Bachtel) Cleveland, age 94, of Brookfield, Missouri, passed peacefully at 9:20 am on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Hillside Village in De Soto, KS. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm.

Mizzou Tigers Exit After One NCAA Win

After proving many skeptics wrong with a round-of-64 triumph over Utah State last Thursday, the University of Missouri-Columbia basketball Tigers’ saw their remarkable season end last Saturday with a 78-63 loss to 15th-seeded Princeton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Sacramento, Calif. The seventh-seeded Tigers (25-10), picked 11th in the Southeastern Conference preseason poll, made the league tournament semifinals for the first time and won the program's first NCAA game in a decade in the inaugural season under head coach Dennis Gates.

Truman VA, Mobile Vet Center to provide on-site services for area Veterans on March 28

The Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital and the Columbia Vet Center are teaming up to provide area Veterans with services that include VA health care enrollment for those who are eligible, as well as counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder and military sexual trauma. Through use of the Mobile Vet Center (MVC), a 37-foot-long mobile resource unit, bereavement, marriage, and family counseling also are available. Additional resources for Veterans through the MVC include VA benefits information and suicide prevention referrals.

FosterAdopt Connect: “Missouri Facing Foster Care Crisis”

The word “crisis” can sometimes be overused, but when it comes to the gap between youth in foster care and the number of available foster homes, the reality is shocking. Reports from Missouri Children’s Division show that there are close to 13,500 youth in state custody, but only about 5,000 licensed foster homes in the state. In Kansas, the Department of Children and Families reports more than 6,200 youth in state custody, but only about 2,400 available foster homes.
