Royalty Wears Purple

Although court markings at their feet highlight “The Valley,” the Meadville High School’s 2022-23 girls’ basketball team stands now at the peak, reigning as Class 1 state champion following last Friday’s 39-28 title-game victory over Chadwick at Missouri State University’s Great Southern Bank Arena in Springfield. That victory, done in come-from-behind fashion for the second game in a row, capped a perfect 31-0 season for this Lady Eagles, who join the 1994-95 girls and 2014-15 boys as MHS state basketball champs.

OUTDOORS:

Missouri’s snagging season opened today and eager anglers will be on the water for the next six weeks, trying to sink their hooks in one of Missouri’s true “monster” fish, as paddlefish (spoonbills) can grow to over 7 feet long and over 100 pounds. The recent warmer weather might have taken the chill off their spawning waters in the tributaries of Lake of the Ozarks, Truman Reservoir, and Table Rock Lake, their major spawning grounds in the Show-Me State and started their annual upstream run.

Meadville Girls to Class 1 Basketball State Semis, Finals

In a flashback to the mid-1990s when a junior-laden squad charged its way into the ranks of the final four Class 1 teams playing and, after finishing fourth, the bulk of that squad returned to win it all the next year, the 202223 Meadville High School Lady Eagles – keyed by a dynamic trio of non-senior guards – will be in Springfield tomorrow and Friday as participants in the Class 1 state tournament semifinals and finals. The 29-0, state-records-setting Meadville girls will meet Leeton's Lady Bulldogs (26-3) in the semifinals at 6 p.m.

Meadville Girls Basketball heads to state

As undefended Korrie Holcer, left, holds the ball on her hip and two Meadville High School basketball Lady Eagles teammates move toward her to start their post-game celebration, Lady Eagles fans who made the 90-minutes trip to Moberly to be on hand applaud the undefeated MHS squad as the last second of last Saturday's 40-23 triumph over St. Elizabeth in the quarterfinals of the Class 1 state tournament ticks off the clock. The victory advances the Lady Eagles to the state semifinals and finals at Springfield's Missouri State University tomorrow and Friday. The 29-0, state-records-setting Meadville girls will meet Leeton's Lady Bulldogs (26-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Great Southern Bank Arena on the MSU campus. If they win, they'll clash with either Chadwick (25-4 prior to its semifinal) or Conception Junction: Jefferson (27-3 prior to its semifinal) for the program's second state title in the same facility Friday at 4 p.m. If the Lady Eagles lose Thursday, they'd play for third place at noon Friday in the adjacent Hammons Student Center against the loser of Thursday's Jefferson-Chadwick clash. For full, on-the-scene coverage of the Lady Eagles' two state-tournament victories from last week, please see the Sports portion of today's 'B' section.
