Martial Arts students promoted

Local martial arts students were promoted to the next level of their martial arts journey following belt grading held in Macon in December 3, 2022. The students train weekly at the North Central Missouri Y through the Traditional Youn Wha Ryu Organization. Classes have been held at the Y for 23 years under the instruction of Natalie Meighan, 5th degree black belt.

Mizzou Men Seeded in SEC Tournament

Just as Major League Baseball splits focus to both continuation of spring training for the bulk of the players and the start of the World Baseball Classic, interest in men’s college basketball becomes laser-focused on this week’s remaining conference tournaments and this coming Sunday’s announcement of NCAA Tournament team selections, pairings, and regional assignments.

County Cagers on All-Tri-County Conference Teams

Linn County-based teams nearly swept all of the five spots on the recently- announced all-Tri-County Conference girls’ basketball team for the 2022-23 season. Among the 10 players from Meadville, Linn County R-1, or Bucklin/Macon County R-4 to the all-league squads were girls’ top-team picks Korrie Holcer and Madison and Paige Carvajal of state semifinalist Meadville and Linn County R-1 senior Morgan Livingston.

Tested Hard, Meadville Basketball Girls Stay Perfect in State Opener

Tall, talented North Shelby squad was within two after three quarters SALISBURY — When junior guard Paige Carvajal popped home two 3-pointers in the game’s first minute and the team’s trademark defensive pressure showed promise of wreaking its usual havoc, the undefeated Meadville High School basketball Lady Eagles teased that their Class 1 state-tournament opener against third-ranked North Shelby’s Lady Raiders might be just another one-sided blowout, as so many of this year’s MHS contests have been. Eventually expanding that lightning- strike start to leads of 11-3 three minutes in and then 21-12 at the conclusion of the initial stanza, Meadville (28-0) still seemed to have a path forward for a blowout.

“Chilli Arts Opry” continues

The Chillicothe Area Arts Council says “Yes” to continuing the new event—“Chilli Arts Opry” the third Saturday each month. Administrator, Mary Lou VanDeventer said, “The event has been a success from the very first Opry January 21. In spite of inclement weather, 120 folks attended.” The CAAC Board initially approved a three month trial with the stipulation the event be totally self-supporting. The attendance numbers have been increasing with standing-room-only for the February show and no empty seats for the March show. The event is at a break-even point financially due to the band donating their time and talents and donations by an individual with a vision and desire to keep the show alive.

February 2023 General Revenue Report

State Budget Director Dan Haug announced net general revenue collections for February 2023 decreased 9.9% compared to those for February 2022, from $781 million last year to $703.5 million this year. Net general revenue collections for 2023 fiscal year-to-date increased 12.9% compared to February 2022, from $7.36 billion last year to $8.31 billion this year.

John Vincent Atanasoff, Inventor

John Vincent Atanasoff was driving. It was a cold winter night; snow blurred his windshield into a frosty haze, and the road was starting to turn white. John was frustrated and needed to be alone with his thoughts. So, he drove. He’d been trying for years to create a computing device, meeting failure after failure. His wife, Lura, and their three children were at home, near the Iowa State campus.
