Stallo Paces Small Marceline State Track, Field Contingent
Junior high hurdler joined at Jeff City by classmate Schick, senior Ratliff this weekend A year after its 5-events girls’ contingent to the Class 2 state trackand- field meet all earned medals, Marceline High School will be represented by only three individuals in three events at this weekend’s 2023 MSHSAA Championships at Jefferson City High School’s “Pete” Adkins Stadium. As a result of performances in last Saturday’s state-qualifying sectional meet at South Shelby High School, west of Shelbina, junior Caleb Stallo in the 110-meters high hurdles, newly-graduated Connor Ratliff in the javelin throw, and junior Aislinn Schick in the girls’ high jump will carry the MHS black and gold on into state competition Friday and Saturday.
Disney students perform “Lion King Kids”
The 5th Grade Music Class at Walt Disney Elementary School in Marceline, MO, presented “The Lion King Kids” in the school’s Multipurpose Room & Gymnasium in three performances-- two on May 10 for the parents and public, and one performance for the elementary school students on May 11. The set of “The Lion King” was designed by school guidance counselor Angella Taylor, and the musical was directed by music instructor Joslyn Lay. Felicia Bratcher, assistant director, presented Lay with a gift bag and acknowledgement after the first performance. The script of “The Lion King” has been performed at musicals since the movie production, and “The Lion King Kids” provides an age-appropriate script for music classes to perform in schools.

It’s been seven years since Missouri turkey hunters checked in more than 44,000 turkeys during the spring season youth and regular seasons, but they accomplished just that this year during the two spring turkey seasons. Youth-season hunters contributed 2,566 turkeys to the final total, down from 2,841 a year ago, but the regular-season hunters added 41,966 to this year’s total harvest, up more than 8,400 turkeys from a year ago.
Brookfield R-III honors 69 graduates at Commencement 2023
The Brookfield R-III School District administration and Board of Education presented diplomas to 69 graduating seniors at this year’s commencement exercises on May 14, 2023. Due to the weekend’s weather conditions, the commencement exercises were held in the Brookfield High School Fieldhouse.
Construction underway at new multipurpose court at Disney Park
Parks Work in partnership with the City of Marceline has begun construction on the new multipurpose court at Disney Park. The courts will include two pickleball courts and a full basketball court. The City of Marceline removed the old court in early March and we’re hoping to pour the new pad in early summer. After the concrete is poured we’ll then move towards the painting of the court, fencing, goals and nets. The final phase will be lighting.

Poppy sales May 25-26 The American Legion Auxiliaries of Linn County will be distributing poppies in Brookfield on May 25 and 26. The poppy became a symbol of sacrifice during World War I in Europe where many wild poppies bloomed.
Tornadoes, high winds damage area community in two counties
Tornadoes touched down in Linn County late Saturday evening, May 6. Two tornadoes caused damage in Linn County and one in Trenton in Grundy County.
Medalist Lichtenberg, O’Dell Power Marceline Golfers Back to State
Marceline High School’s golf Tigers are headed to the Class 1 state tournament for team competition for a third year in a row. With half of last year’s Class 1 state runnersup – Braden Lichtenberg and Lance O’Dell – delivering career-best, tournament-best rounds and a teammate also playing 18 holes of competition better than he ever had before, the Tigers came up with a 353 team total from their top scores in Monday’s District 3 tournament, edging Canton for the second and final team-advancement berth for next week’s state tournament at Columbia by one solitary stroke.
