Chariton Valley announces two local scholarship recipients

Chariton Valley Telephone Cooperative and Chariton Valley Communications Corporation announced five area students, including, Makenna Stundebeck of Salisbury and Hannah Rice of Brunswick, each were awarded a $500 Chariton Valley Scholarship and, in conjunction with the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), Hannah Rice also received the JSI Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Founded in 1994, FRS is the philanthropic arm of NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, of which Chariton Valley is a member.

Brookfield Track, Field Girls Champions in Unionville Meet

Behind a hefty haul from the relay races and middle- and long-distance races, Brookfield High School’s track-and-field Lady Bulldogs – in what they’d love to be a precursor to their return visit this weekend – came away from last Friday’s Marcus Hounsom Relays at Unionville as champions of the girls’ division by a sizable margin. The BHS girls took first place in the 400-, 800-, and 1,600-meters relays and the 400-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meters runs, while also claiming a second, two thirds, a fourth, sixth, and seventh spot from that same group of events.

Stairway to Heaven

Marceline High School upperclassman and their dates celebrated prom 2023 with a Stairway to Heaven theme on Saturday, April 29, with the annual Grand March and dance. The Grand March had to be moved inside due to the cold temperatures and a light rainstorm that moved through town just before the event was to begin.

JAMES L. CLEMANS

James L. Clemans, age 97, of Linneus, Missouri, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023, at McLarney Manor in Brookfield, Missouri. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Wright Funeral Home in Brookfield with Pastor Arch Phillips officiating. The family received friends Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial is in the Elmwood Cemetery, Linneus. Memorial contributions to the Linneus United Methodist Church or American Legion Post 538 may be left at or mailed to Wright Funeral Home, P.O. Box 496, Brookfield, Missouri 64628. James L., son of Chester and Iva L. (Kemper) Clemans, was born July 5, 1925, in Linneus, Missouri. Jim was a 1944 graduate of Laclede High School. After graduation he joined the United States Army in 1944 serving as a T/5 Corporal in World War II where he received the Good Conduct Medal, EAMET Ribbon and Victory Ribbon. Jim was a member of the Linneus United Methodist Church, Jackson Lodge #82, American Legion Post 538, VFW Post #455, and a long-time volunteer for the Linneus Fire Department. Jim worked for over 28 years as a truck driver for the MFA Elevator in Linneus and Brookfield. He was an avid hunter and especially loved hunting quail. Jim enjoyed spending his days driving around Linneus, people watching, and spending time at the local diner. Survivors include his sister, Dorothy Chapman of Chillicothe and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his friend and longtime companion, Wanda Hoskins; and one sister, Jean Smith.

Having decided, as they watched the first two-thirds of the opening round play out that they had little to gain by making a trade up or down with their first-round pick, the Super Bowl champions tabbed Kansas Citian Felix Anudike-Uzomah, an edge defensive lineman out of Kansas State University, to join their latest title defense.

Brookfield Baseball Battles Back to .500 Mark

A relatively-heavy week of play to start getting sharpened for next week’s district tournament saw Marceline High School’s golf Tigers win a 5-schools match at the district-tourney site last Friday after besting two foes in a triple-dual to start last week and then taking seventh place among 12 varsity teams in a mixed-formats tournament at Kirksville. Both of the county’s golf teams are spending this week practicing in preparation for next Monday’s scheduled state-qualifying district tourneys.

Striding into the future . . .

In the coming weeks, high school seniors across the country will don caps and gowns and proudly walk across a stage to receive a diploma in the culmination of a 13-year goal that has taken the support of many people along the way in order to achieve it. Seniors, your family, in particular, has been with you every step of the way and I hope you thank them.
