The Missouri Homeland Security Advisory Council was briefed Aug. 16 on Missouri’s coordinated response to the June 27 Amtrak train derailment following a collision with a truck at a railroad crossing in Mendon. Three passengers on the train and the driver of the truck were killed. Over 150 people were injured. First responders and the community have received praise for their fast action and coordinated response, and the hospitality provided by the Chariton County community, which quickly established a shelter to assist the injured and displaced. According to a post on social media by the Missouri Department of Public Safety, presenting were Missouri State Emergency Management Agency Region B Coordinator Jeff Alton, Chariton County Ambulance District Superintendent Eric McKenzie and Salisbury Fire Department Assistant Chief Zach Jones. Amtrack is hosting a Community Appreciation Lunch from 12-3 p.m., on Aug. 27 at Northwestern School in Mendon.
