The Adair County Family YMCA is opening a new “Free Little Library” that will allow anyone to pick up or drop off books at a station at the Kiwanis Playground.

The Free Little Library consists of a large mailbox-style installation at the playground where visitors are encouraged to share literature for all ages using the “take a book, leave a book” system.

“Through Free Little Libraries, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds,” YMCA Program Director Luke Callaghan said.

The YMCA after school program ran a competition to decide the design of the Free Little Library, in which over 100 children submitted design concepts. The winning drawing, by 8-year-old Paityn Blunk, features a bright blue library box topped with daisies.

Blunk’s design was the basis for the concept refined by Fossil Forge Design and constructed at the Kiwanis Playground.

The YMCA will host an unveiling event for the library at the playground Saturday at 2 p.m.
