Bettie Jo Bernard Hartig

Bettie Jo Bernard Hartig passed away peacefully Thursday, July 14, 2022 at her daughter’s home in St. Catharine, MO. She was born at home in Taylor, TX on June 4, 1932 and grew up in the Waco area of TX. She was proud of her first “real” job at Amicable Life Insurance Co. in Houston and would tell stories of being a determined red head and making a career for herself. After moving to El Paso, Texas in her 20’s, she worked at Standard Oil Refinery as a secretary, where she met her husband, Frank, and they were married for 54 years before his passing in September of 2015. After leaving Std. Oil, she worked as a secretary for Robert E. McKee Construction Company for many years before the family’s move to Benicia, CA in 1976. Once in CA, Bettie took on secretary temp jobs thru Kelly’s Temp Service and continued to work until she retired in 1987 to become a full-time grandmother and assist in lovingly caring for all her grandchildren through the years. In the words of her granddaughter in law “She was a grandma to all”.

Bettie was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Pleasant Hill, CA and enjoyed bowling, crocheting, family get togethers, cooking and baking cookies; especially at Christmas time, when she would bake 15 different kinds to deliver with her husband to friends and family over the holiday.

Bettie is survived by her daughter Heidi (Ron) Wampler; son Frank (Peggie) Hartig Jr.; her grandchildren Kyle (Belinda) DiAngelo, Matthew (Katie) DiAngelo, Stephen Santos & Cody Hartig; great-grandchildren Sophia and Tripp DiAngelo, Cassie Ariza, and Colton Erdman; her niece Terri Burkey; great nephews Joshua Hodde (Kelsey), Jacob Burkey and great niece, Katie Gatlin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, daughter Melinda Sue Hartig, her parents Roy and Juanita Bernard, sister Freddie Avant, brothers Roy Jr. and Howard Bernard, and a sister, Winona Bernard, who was stillborn.

Burial services will be held 1:30 pm, Tuesday, July 26th, at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. The family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice for the wonderful care they provided in aiding Bettie’s daughter with her care at home this last year; especially her bathing aide Katie and nurses Mary, Brandy and Billie who helped with keeping her comfortable while at home.

Memorial donations in honor of Bettie Hartig may be made to Brookfield Senior Center or Compassus Hospice and may be sent to Rhodes Funeral Home, 216 Linn St., Brookfield, MO 64628.

Arrangements are under the Rhodes Funeral Home, Brookfield, MO.
