There’s a certain electricity that settles over the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia after the sun dips below the horizon. The dust from a day’s worth of livestock shows and foot traffic begins to settle, the smell of kettle corn and funnel cakes drifts lazily through the air, and the grandstand lights take on a warm glow that promises the night is far from over. The infamous fair has been on the run here this first and mid part of August.

There’s something nostalgic about a town square—the quiet charm of locally owned shops, the familiar faces behind the counter, and the sense that community really does mean something here. It was during a conversation with a shopkeeper recently, standing right on one of those time-worn squares, that I was reminded just how vital these small businesses are—not just to our economy, but to our way of life.
