In major cities, too often historic properties are razed to make way for “progress”. However, rehabbing a historic property is more cost-effective and fiscally better for the community than tearing it down and building a modern monstrosity.
I’m a historian/historic preservation specialist, parent of two, a former college- level English instructor, and a disabled Army veteran. I am an outsider to rural Missouri communities like those in Linn County, and thankful to everyone in the communities I’ve visited and spoke with who have welcomed me with open arms as I attempt to help cities and owners of historic and potentially historic properties find their place on the National Register of Historic Places and help them qualify for funding opportunities to preserve history. I’m from Michigan originally. My mother was born and raised in a rural northern Michigan county that had at the time as many residents as Marceline does currently. I spent nearly every holiday break and most summers “up north”. I learned to hunt, trap and fish in that town. It was simple there, not the rat race of the city. I had to endure school in Detroit, but my heart was always in rural Michigan. I often joke that growing up I didn’t dare date anyone in the county because I was related to 90% of the population by blood or through marriage.
Dear Amy: For over 15 years, we have lived next door to our wonderful neighbors. We're great friends with the parents and have been blessed to watch their three kids grow up.
Dear Amy: I recently found out that my husband of seven years has been using high-interest credit cards in his own name to buy expensive luxury items (wine, watches, clothing, etc.). The total bill of this debt is $20,000.
The American Christmas cards have upheld their tradition for 180 years. Those of us of a certain age, remember fondly watching and hoping the Postman would leave those distinctive brightly colored envelopes in our mailbox.
Dear Amy: My adult niece lives several hundred miles away, and said she wanted to come visit us in Florida with her husband and their new baby. Since they both work, the visit would be only for three or four days.
Dear Amy: My wife’s sister “Georgia” and her fiancé “Jon” are getting married in March. As the wedding is getting closer, their Save the Date cards were sent out with a wedding website listed on the card.
