These fish are fun to catch on a rod and reel, and offer bow fishers an opportunity to stretch strings all year long. For the 46th year the annual Great Pershing Ballon Derby was held Sept. 3-5, over Labor Day weekend. The three-day event featured a balloon glow on Main Street in Brookfield, a 12 p.m., parade and vendors in Twin Parks on Saturday and balloon glows Saturday and Sunday nights at Peacher Launch Site just outside of Laclede. Balloons were only able to fly on Saturday morning, and several balloons were able to take flight Sunday evening due to weather throughout the weekend. Despite uncooperative weather there was still good attendance for the balloon glows Saturday and Sunday night. Five people died in traffic crashes, one person died in a boating crash, and one person drowned during the 2022 Labor Day holiday weekend, according to preliminary reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). The Patrol investigated four of the traffic fatalities; Springfield Police Department investigated one traffic fatality. The 2022 counting period for the Labor Day holiday was from 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, through 11:59 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5.
Free Skin Cancer Screenings The Livingston County Health Center is hosting a free Skin Cancer Screening from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., and 3-6 p.m., on Sept. 14 at the Livingston County Health Department.
On July 27, 2022 a Livingston County jury found Nancy Royal guilty of Abuse/Neglect of a Child Resulting in Death, Involuntary Manslaughter in the First Degree, Abuse of a Child, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree in the death of an 11 year old boy in 2019.
