What Is Spinal Muscular Atrophy?

Individuals inherit many things from their parents, from eye color to body shape. Though such characteristics are something everyone has, inherited diseases are less common yet far more serious. Spinal muscular atrophy is an inherited disease that affects muscles and nerves. According to the Cleveland Clinic, SMA causes muscles to become increasingly weak. SMA mostly affects infants and young children. However, it can affect adults from time to time.

All Aboard For Railroad Days

Railroad Day was held at Brookfield Junction Park on Aug. 13. A variety of groups and organizations donated raffle items, food and prizes. Some of the supporting groups and businesses include Chariton Valley, Prengers, BNSF, Brookfield Junction Park Board, Brookfield Rotary, Brookfield Public Library, Stanbury Uniforms, Macon Coca Cola, the City of Brookfield and numerous volunteers. Those attending the event enjoyed kidde train rides, displays, a raffle, face painting and more.

Challenge Issued to Support Animal Shelter The first week of July, the Brookfield Elks Lodge #874 collected $373 for the Animal Shelter of Linn County. They are now challenging all the other groups and organizations to match or exceed the donation, said Brookfield Elks Lodge #874 Lodge Secretary Larry Shew.

East Locust Creek Reservoir To Be Named “Roy Blunt Reservoir”

At their regularly scheduled monthly meeting, the North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission (NCMRWC) voted unanimously to name the East Locust Creek Reservoir (ELCR) in honor of Missouri’s senior Senator, Roy Blunt. Both the Sullivan County Commission and the NCMRWC received a letter from Governor Mike Parson to consider naming the ELCR in honor of retiring Senator Blunt. Chairman Harve Rhodes placed the issue on the agenda for consideration. Breaking precedent, and with the permission of the Commissioners, the public was invited to share their thoughts and opinions relative to the naming of the reservoir before taking up the Resolution for consideration.
