125 years ago, June 1897, 20 Black Buffalo Soldiers left Missoula, Montana riding bicycles arriving at St. Louis, Missouri 41 days (1,900 miles) later. The bicycle was a new invention and the United States Army wanted to test if the bicycle could be a practical weapon of war. The Buffalo Soldiers nicknamed the Iron Riders proved the bicycle could move further and quicker than cavalry or infantry. On Tuesday, July 19, members of the Kansas City Alexander Madison Buffalo Soldiers Organization gave a program at the Laclede, Missouri City Park commemorating the 1897 historic bicycle trek.
