Research tells us that by increasing your child’s self-esteem and self-awareness, you can help give your children protective factors. These protective factors are qualities that keep them from trying activities that can hurt them. Children who have protective factors tend to avoid underage drinking, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, and school failure. A strong sense of self and an "I can do it!" attitude helps us deal with life's frustrations. Children need to feel safe, secure, loved, and connected to a family.
