MDC Reports Final CWD Results For 2021 Deer Season

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that it sampled and tested more than 32,000 deer for chronic wasting disease (CWD) between July 2021 and April 2022. Of the more than 32,000 deer sampled, 86 tested positive for CWD. T hose deer bring the total number of CWD cases found in the state to 292 since the first case in wild deer was found by MDC in early 2012. Including recent sampling efforts, MDC has collected more than 210,000 tissue samples for CWD testing since the disease was first detected.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International reports that home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year. Those fires exact a significant human and financial toll, causing roughly 500 deaths and more than 1,400 injuries while leading to $1.3 billion in property damage. Smoke detectors are an important safety feature that may not prevent fires, but they can prevent deaths caused by home fires. In fact, the ESFI reports that 65 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no working smoke detectors.

Marceline Municipal Pool Extended Closure For Maintenance

Beginning May 2, the Marceline Municipal Swimming Pool will be closed for the take-down of the winter dome structure. This closure period will be extended this year for the repainting of the pool basin being done by Ashley’s Finest Painting as this process is required to keep the pool basin surface area in good condition, City Manager Richard Hoon said in a press release.

State Representative Candidate Guest Speaker

Josh Vance, the Democrat candidate for Missouri 7th State Representative District was guest speaker at the Linn County Democrat Club meeting, April 21, at the Brookfield China Garden Restaurant. Vance, a caseworker at the North Central Missouri Mental Health Center, stated his emphasis will be education and health care. Vance also expressed his concern on Missouri law reducing local control over concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO).
