Starting Garden Transplants from Seed

The recent rash of unseasonably warm weather has many gardeners anxious to get into their gardens. However, history shows that the last frost in NW Missouri generally comes no later than April 18th. So the chances of more cold weather, and yes snow, are still quite good. To help counter some of that excitement, you should consider starting some of your plants inside for transplanting to the garden when it warms us. While most plants can be direct seeded into the garden, many plants benefit from being started inside then transplanted outside.

Sheriff Holds Informal Meeting To Discuss Sales Tax Increase

In an effort to help educate the public and answer questions about the county-wide law enforcement sales tax that will be on the April 5 ballot Linn County Sheriff Jeff Henke Sheriff enjoyed a morning with discussed the proposed tax and other matters with several groups of coffee drinkers at Brookfield McDonald’s on March 8. Henke will also hold a meeting from 7:30-9 a.m., on March 24 at Ma Vic’s in Marceline. The ballot language for the proposed increase, reads, “Shall the County of Linn impose a countywide sales tax of one quarter of one percent for the purpose of providing law enforcement services for the county?” Watch the Linn County Leader for more information on this, and other municipal and county-wide election coverage in advance of the April 5 election.

The Department of Social Services has begun accepting applications for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP), a new program that may be able to help with a one-time payment for water and/or wastewater bills. LI- HWAP can help with disconnection or reconnection fees, threats to disconnect water or wastewater, and current or past due water or wastewater bills. The maximum benefit amount available is $750.
