Patterson Family Foundation Donates To Leadership Northwest

Leadership Northwest Missouri recently received a charitable gift from the Patterson Family Foundation in the amount of $2,000. These funds will assist with sustaining the group’s mission to build, strengthen and inspire leaders through training and networking experiences. The Patterson Family Foundation is a family-led foundation extending the legacy of Neal and Jeanne Patterson. They strive to help lift up rural communities through health care, education, economic opportunity, and beyond. Their mission is “Advancing health care, education, and strengthening communities, particularly in rural areas.” Leadership Northwest Missouri is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Missouri Century Farms

The Missouri Century Farm application process is open from now until May 1st. The Century Farm program took hold in 1975 with the Bicentennial Committees. A University agriculture journalism graduate Jerri Sloan, took on the committee secretary duties and was placed in Columbia at the University of Missouri with the agriculture editors. Dick Lee, an agricultural editor worked with the committee and their ideas. Extension Specialists were asked to work with local agricultural committees to help ensure agriculture had a place in the American Revolution Bicentennial festivals. The project then, and still today with a different name, recognizes family farms that have been owned by the same family for at least 100 years.

Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge Opens March 5

The gates at Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge will once again open to the public on Saturday, March 5, at 6 a.m. The Refuge is closed annually from late October to the first Saturday of March to allow for undisturbed habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl. Once spring arrives the place becomes a Refuge for people as well as wildlife. Whether it’s fishing, bird watching, a relaxing drive or a hike through the woods, Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a place for everyone to enjoy. There are an abundance of outdoor public use opportunities at Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The 2,000 acre Silver Lake is open to fishing and the Auto Tour Route provides for a relaxing drive. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities available, as the entire refuge is open to foot traffic during this time. Additionally, there is a nature trail by the old Visitor Center with a nice overlook and scopes near the Swan Lake marsh. The refuge is open to antler shed hunting, mushroom and berry picking for personal use.

Filing Begins Tuesday For County Seats

The first day for filing for Linn County offices up for election in the August primary is Feb. 22 to be placed on the August 2022 ballot. Seats up for election in Linn County, according to County Clerk Suzan Stephenson are Associate Circuit Judge, Presiding Commissioner, County Clerk, Recorder of Deeds, Circuit Court Clerk and Prosecuting Attorney. These offices are all four-year terms. The last day for candidates filing for the August 2 Primary Election is March 29.

Recently, Brookfield FFA members competed with their proficiency applications that highlight their Supervised Agriculture Experience Projects. The following students placed. Jonathan Beeler, 1st place, Diversified Crop Production, advancing to state; Charlee Reese, 1st place, Specialty Crop Production, advancing to state; Rylan Head, 2nd Place, Small Animal Production; Baylor Montgomery, 2nd place, Beef Production, 2nd place, Forage Production, 2nd place, Veterinary Science; Nessa Montgomery, 2nd, Place Swine Production and Lily Falconer, 3rd place, Ag Processing.

Students Of The Week

Recently, Maddie Dauber and Savannah Emmerich were named Marceline Middle and high School Students of the Week. Dauber’s activities include cheerleading, wrestling, Art Club and Interact. She enjoys spending time with friends and family. Emmerich’s activities include softball, basketball, track and FBLA. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with friends and family.
