The 60th annual Peanut Night in Marceline on Saturday followed a day full of holiday craft shows and other events around the area. Main Street USA in Marcleine was filled with area residents patronizing businesses and purchasing the traditional $1 bag of peanuts. The event is sponsored by the Marceline Area Chamber of Commerce; the Walsworth Community Center sponsored the craft show, an Mason’s had chilli and hot chocolate. A new coronavirus variant revived old conspiracy theories this week as widely shared social media posts falsely claimed the omicron variant was nothing but a cover-up for darker agendas. Some online personalities over the weekend suggested omicron was invented as an excuse to change voting laws, or as a distraction from this week’s sex trafficking trial of longtime Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

After this donation, the total donations to the Walsworth Family Charitable Foundation will be $800,000. Each year, the Foundation makes its 5% endowment distribution to the community center. To date, the community center has received $200,253. The all-volunteer members of the Board of Directors of the Walsworth Community Center represent the community with a broad spectrum of ages, occupations, and talents. The dedicated Board Members include Kathi Stuart, Barb Meissen, Estella Cupp, Paula Wright, Sallie Buck, Janice Yates, Tommy Oldham, Dennis VanDyke and consultant Lindsay Bowling. “Our continuing financial support will ensure the community center will be able to continue its mission of providing a venue where local citizens of all ages can gather to enjoy athletic and social events,” Walsworth added. After a slow start, the United States has improved its surveillance system for tracking new coronavirus variants such as omicron, boosting its capacity by tens of thousands of samples per week since early this year.
