Coaches, school officials, parents and other family members, fellow students, and fans saluted the 2021- 22 winter sports athletes of Brookfield High School at the annual postseason awards ceremony in the middle school gym last Tuesday evening.
Pending 2022 Marceline High School graduate Gracey Jordan (front, center), an integral member of the MHS softball Lady Tigers’ 2021 Class 2 state champions, as well as the 2019 state third-place finishers, signed a National Junior College Athletics Association letter-of-intent to accept a scholarship from the new Moberly Area Community College softball program to continue her diamond career there under head coach Matt Bauer. On hand to witness the signing were, from left, her mother Katie and father Ben flanking her and (standing) MHS head coach Todd Lowther, her sister Bentley, and Bauer. As a senior last fall, Jordan, the team’s No. 1 catcher, she batted .440 with a .500 on-base average and a .714 slugging rate as the Lady Tigers went 28-3-1 to grab their first state crown. In the state semifinals and finals, she ripped a win-clinching home run in each contest – a grand slam that sealed the 10-4 final-inning, come-from-behind victory over New Bloomfield and then a seventh-inning 2-runs blast that turned a 2-1 lead MHS had just taken in the title game against Creighton: Sherwood into a 4-1 advantage the Lady Tigers protected in the last half-inning. Those two shots left her with six round-trippers on the season, tied for second on the team. Adding to the impressiveness of the title-game shot over the left-field wall was that she did so despite having lower back spasms before and during the game that threatened to force her from the contest. Not surprisingly, between her display at the state semifinals and finals in Springfield and her season-long numbers, she was a first-team All-State selection in Class 2 by members of the Missouri High School Fastpitch Coaches Association. During her four years in the program, she and her classmates were part of 4-consecutive district-championship teams and state-tourney participants that amassed a cumulative 93-13-1 record.
