A Tradition Of Their Own

While their male counterparts were extending and enhancing their program’s long and outstanding tradition of state-level success last weekend with two individual state champions, three other medal-earners, and a third-place team finish, Brookfield High School’s fledgling Lady Bulldogs wrestling program was initiating its own budding tradition of mat excellence. Having qualified three wrestlers – its most ever, for the single-classification girls’ state tournament at Columbia, two of them – BHS senior Oscarina Jackson (right and in action photo) and freshman Riley Howell (left) – earned state medals. Howell captured fifth place in the 159-pounds weight division and Jackson sixth at 174. Jackson made her second appearance in the state tourney where, last year, then-teammate Zoey Chrisman earned Brookfield’s first girls’ wrestling state medal when she took fifth place in her division (174).
