A Tradition Of Their Own

While their male counterparts were extending and enhancing their program’s long and outstanding tradition of state-level success last weekend with two individual state champions, three other medal-earners, and a third-place team finish, Brookfield High School’s fledgling Lady Bulldogs wrestling program was initiating its own budding tradition of mat excellence. Having qualified three wrestlers – its most ever, for the single-classification girls’ state tournament at Columbia, two of them – BHS senior Oscarina Jackson (right and in action photo) and freshman Riley Howell (left) – earned state medals. Howell captured fifth place in the 159-pounds weight division and Jackson sixth at 174. Jackson made her second appearance in the state tourney where, last year, then-teammate Zoey Chrisman earned Brookfield’s first girls’ wrestling state medal when she took fifth place in her division (174). Although he’s the one actually lying on the mat

Although he’s the one actually lying on the mat, senior Hunter Nelson of the Marceline High School wrestling Tigers actually has control and is scoring near-fall points against Ethan Jackson of Cape Girardeau: Notre Dame during their first-round bout in the 182-pounds weight division of the Class 1 state tournament last Thursday. Nelson, expected to be a strong contender for another state medal and possibly battle for the state title, sustained an apparent head injury in his quarterfinal bout and had to withdraw from the competition after a 33-5 season.
