Despite Girls’ Strong Opener, Marceline Quickly Lands In Macon Fifth-Place Games

MACON — It didn’t take long to solidify the final-round status of Marceline High School’s basketball teams in this week’s Macon Invitational Tournament. With only six schools entered, the tourney used a 2-pools, round-robin format for each gender to determine the pairings for the first-, third-, and fifth-place games late in the week.

Polley’s OT Takedown Lifts Brookfield Wrestlers Past Trenton by Point

TRENTON — With team victory presumably hanging in the balance in what had been – as expected – a tooth-and-nail battle of Bulldogs throughout the match, Brookfield High School’s Trent Polley and Trenton’s Sam Gibson provided the expected tight, tension-filled 195-pounds bout in last Tuesday’s dual between two squads that figure to show well in next month’s Class 1 state tournament.

Meadville Tournament Looms For All Smaller County Schools’ Cagers

All 10 Linn County Class 1 high school basketball teams will spend this week participating in the Meadville Invitational Tournament with a couple expected to fare well. The host Lady Eagles, 2-times defending champs, are seeded second behind Mercer, while Mendon: Northwestern’s boys, upset in last year’s semifinals by Grundy County R-5/Newtown-Harris before Meadville took the crown, are seeded first ahead of GCR-5/Newtown-Harris this year.

Another Thriller To Marceline Hoops Boys Over Brookfield

MILAN — With a trip to the championship game of the Milan Invitational tournament on the line, but perhaps secondary in importance to their natural rivalry, the Marceline and Brookfield high school boys’ basketball teams took the court against each other for a second time in seven nights last Thursday, having gone to overtime before a MHS rally had led to a Tigers overtime triumph the Friday before.

Brookfield Wrestlers Rule Night At Home

BROOKFIELD — There wasn’t any drama to the outcomes of the Brookfield High School wrestling Bulldogs’ home matches against Chillicothe and Gallatin last Thursday. With 36 points assured through gaps in the Gallatin lineup, BHS took battle of Bulldogs 45-21, even though it won only two of six contested bouts (one weight was a double-forfeit with no team points awarded).
