OUTDOORS: CWD Found In New Areas

The Missouri Department of Conservation has released the findings from its chronic wasting disease (CWD) sampling and testing for the 2023 surveillance year between July 2023 and April 2024.During this period, 37,000 deer were sampled and 162 tested positive for CWD.CWD is 100% fatal to white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family.

Brookfield, Marceline High Track-and-Field Teams Into Postseason Tomorrow

Having wrapped up generally mediocre 2024 seasons, Brookfield’s and Marceline’s high school track-and-field teams will start trying to advance runners, jumpers and throwers to the May 17-18 Class 2 state meet tomorrow when they participate in the district meet at Monroe City.Any MHS or BHS athletes who place in the top four of an event tomorrow advance to next Saturday’s state-qualifying sectional meet at Mokane (South Callaway High School) near Jefferson City.Both of the county’s largest schools were in a pair of competitions in the past 10 days, including their respective conference meets, with some individual successes, but not a significant amount.In the Lewis and Clark Conference meet at Paris this past Monday, Marceline swept the boys’ hurdles races and the boys’ 1,600-meters relay, but both teams finished in the lower half of the 8-schools team standings.State prospect Caleb Stallo took the 110-meters high hurdles in 16 seconds flat and Hudson Schmitt prevailed in the 300 intermediates in 47.48 seconds.

Marceline’s O’Dell Third in Conference Golf Tourney

MOBERLY — With a season-best overall performance, paced by third-place individual Lance O’Dell, Marceline High School’s golf Tigers earned a solid third-place team finish, as well, in their final Lewis and Clark Conference Boys’ Championships a week ago.With O’Dell firing an 83 on the Heritage Hills Golf Course and Ethan Tarpening leading the other four varsity-lineup members in breaking 100, the Tigers came away with a low-4 team score of 368 for the 18-holes tournament, only eight shots behind runnerup Harrisburg.

OUTDOORS: Youth Turkey Harvest Most Since 2017

Missouri’s young turkey hunters, despite the high wind both days, had a great youth-only season on April 6-7, checking in 3,721 turkeys.The 2015 youth season’s total of 4,100 was the last of three previous seasons to exceed 4,000 turkeys taken and that includes the youth-season record of 4,441 checked in in 2015.The top three youth-season harvest counties statewide this year were Gasconade with 92, Franklin with 89, and Miller with 83.

OUTDOORS: Turkey Season Opens Monday

The eagerly-awaited Missouri spring wild turkey season is set to open only three days from now, on April 15, so there’s very little time left for turkey hunters’ scouting and getting their gear ready.We’ve had just enough warm weather to get the big gobblers seeking out hens and gobbling in the trees in early morning.The youth-only season has come and gone, so some of the “early birds” are already in someone’s freezer.

Marceline Baseball Levels Record Again

All of Marceline High School’s spring sports squads were in action late last week, but the weather early this week limited scheduled MHS competitions.The baseball Tigers continued their alternation of outcomes a week ago yesterday when they edged visiting Mendon: Northwestern, 9-8.Golf Tiger Lance O’Dell was runnerup medalist in a 4-schools match at Moberly that same day, while the track-and-field athletes were winning three events in the Fayette Relays meet.No details were available at press time on the win which again leveled the baseball varsity’s record – this time at 3-3.After having a would-be Monday home game with Paris postponed until 5 p.m.
