MEADVILLE — The matchup of which Meadville High School basketball Lady Eagles head coach Steve Carvajal had been wary since the first week of January came to pass last Friday night and demonstrated why it had been concerning. The Cairo Lady Bearcats, state participants on the Class 2 level each of the past two years and ousted from that tourney in the quarterfinals last year by eventual champion Tipton, used their superior depth to fight through apparently-significant, in-game injuries to two starters and out-duel the host Lady Eagles 71-58 in the 2023-24 Class 1 state tourney quarterfinals a week ago tonight. The outcome not only ended MHS’ previously-perfect season at 28-1, but also terminated its 59-games winning streak over the past two seasons.
By DENNIS HUGHESSpecial to the LCLJust as happened two years earlier, medical misfortune marred the Brookfield High School Lady Bulldogs’ spirited bid to spring a big surprise in their district tournament.A week ago Wednesday, a budding upset of top-seeded host Carrollton in the girls’ Class 3 District 16 Tournament semifinals was sidetracked by an injury and ultimately derailed in a season-halting 43-41 loss.Giving the Lady Trojans all they could handle, the upset-minded Lady Bulldogs led 23-21 late in the third quarter when Jerzi Fields fell to the floor in agony.

CARROLLTON — After battling past their first-round opponent in the Class 3 District 16 Tournament this past Monday night, Brookfield High School’s Lady Bulldogs were left to carry on the BHS basketball banner for 2023-24 when the third-seeded Bulldogs were shaded by sixth seed Lathrop, 57-54, the next night. The Lady ’Dogs rallied with timely and clutch shooting Monday to knock out fourth-seeded Lexington, 44-39, in the opening round of the tournament.Advancing to the semifinals, where they met host and top-seeded Carrollton (17-8) Wednesday night, the Lady Bulldogs (8-17) spurred hope of a repeat of their near-“rags-to-riches” postseason performance of two years ago when, as the lowest seed, they posted two upsets to earn a crack at the crown and seemed on their way to it before a knee injury felled their top player, Ella Daugherity.Monday evening, after a back-and-forth contest for three quarters, the BHS girls found themselves trailing, 31-29, entering the final period. That turned out to be their last deficit.Jerzi Fields drained a ‘3” on a dish from Maddie Wilbeck on the Lady ‘Dogs’ first possession of the fourth frame.
