Mother Nature was nearly batting 1.000 against Linn County’s high school baseball teams entering this week, allowing only one of about a dozen slated games to occur in the first nine playing dates of the 2023 season. The exception to the inclement weather and too-soggy field conditions was the Marceline Tigers’ home game against Glasgow last Friday, which the hosts dropped, 12-3.
Although the weather turned more sports-friendly at the start of this week, the first nine potential days of spring sports action for Marceline’s and Brookfield’s high school teams generated far more postponements and/or cancellations than they did competition.
As the new Major League Baseball season dawns at home for the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow afternoon, as it looks like the weather will allow, it finds them in familiar, if dissimilar, situations.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has set several of the 2023 fall hunting seasons and most of them are pretty much the same as last year’s. Black bear and elk seasons have a limited number of permits available and these can be applied for in May.
COLUMBIA — Although the weather has been generally uncooperative for competition in the nearly two weeks since Missouri high school spring sports teams were permitted to start having games, matches and meets, both Marceline and Brookfield high school’s boys’ golf teams were able to get one tournament under their belts last week. On Monday, March 20, both participated in the Father Tolton Regional Invitational tournament at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia with sharply-contrasting results.
En route to their undefeated Class 1 state championship, the 2022-23 Meadville High School basketball Lady Eagles shredded opponents with often-devastating defensive pressure that, over the course of their 31 victories in 31 tries, led to a couple of new state records as a team and nearly an individual state mark. With the MHS girls’ historic season now fully in the books, their start-tofinish perfection is only beginning to grow in stature.
Although they won’t know for certain where for a while yet, 2023 spring sports teams from Linn County and overlapping schools at least now know against whom they’ll compete in postseason action this May.
Seventeen players from the 12 high school basketball teams representing Linn County or adjacent schools have been chosen to all-district teams selected by either members of the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters (MSSA) or Missouri Basketball Coaches associations (MBCA). Announced today, the MSSA’s geographically- wider all-northeast and all-central district teams for 2022-23 Missouri State High School Activities Association classes one or three teams have a dozen county players, including three from Meadville’s state-championship girls’squad, three from the Mendon: Northwestern boys, and one apiece from the Linn County R-1, Marceline and Brookfield girls’ and boys’ clubs.

After proving many skeptics wrong with a round-of-64 triumph over Utah State last Thursday, the University of Missouri-Columbia basketball Tigers’ saw their remarkable season end last Saturday with a 78-63 loss to 15th-seeded Princeton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Sacramento, Calif. The seventh-seeded Tigers (25-10), picked 11th in the Southeastern Conference preseason poll, made the league tournament semifinals for the first time and won the program's first NCAA game in a decade in the inaugural season under head coach Dennis Gates.
