Brookfield Wrestlers Sweep Regular-Season Finale

BROOKFIELD — Challenged only once in five overall bouts, Brookfield High School’s wrestling teams wrapped up their 2022-23 regular season Jan. 24 by sweeping visiting Kirksville, Palmyra and Mexico in dual matches for both genders. The Bulldogs were tested by Kirksville, but prevailed by having a full lineup, while the Tigers had openings at 150 and 215 pounds that gave BHS its 12-points winning margin of 44-32.

BHS Basketball Girls Reach 15 Wins with Sharp Triumph

While they haven’t fashioned anything more than a 5-games winning streak, the 2022-23 Brookfield High School basketball Lady Bulldogs have used steadily- solid work to reach three times that many victories with the final month of the regular season still ahead of them. At home last Friday night, what BHS girls’ head coach Ronnie Sharp labels a “great win for us” saw the Lady ’Dogs bite Ewing: Highland’s Lady Cougars, 44-38.

Winning Week on Hardwoods for Marceline Girls

Marceline High School’s basketball Lady Tigers were eight minutes away from a perfect 3-0 week last week, but couldn’t quite close the deal at home. Following an early-week 52-45 triumph at Milan and a home Lewis and Clark Conference 46-39 decision over Scotland County the night before, the Lady Tigers (12-8, 3-1 conf.) led visiting North Shelby for most or all of the first three quarters of their game last Friday before the Lady Raiders uncorked a 26-points final frame to pull out a 62-56 verdict.

Ten $1,000 scholarships now open to Midwest high school seniors

High school seniors from Missouri and five other states now have a chance to receive one of 10 college scholarships worth $1,000. Registration is open now through April 28, 2023. Parents are also now able to register their student. High school seniors or their parents may register for the ISL Midwest Senior Scholarship at www.IowaStudentLoan. Lending will award $1,000 scholarships to 10 students whose names are randomly drawn after the registration period. There are no financial need, grade point average or class rank requirements. The ISL Midwest Senior Scholarship can be used at any eligible institution in the United States. Registered participants also receive emails highlighting financial literacy tips, such as the importance of early career and college planning and ways to reduce student loan indebtedness.

Marceline’s Sportsman, Weese, D. Griffin, Dauber Tourney Champs

BROOKFIELD — A quartet of Marceline High School wrestlers came away from last weekend’s Brookfield-hosted tournaments with individual titles. In last Friday’s BHS Girls’ Invitational, Maddie Dauber faced and pinned three opponents to capture the 100-pounds division, Payton Weese bested five 135-pounds foes – all within the first period, and Molly Sportsman went 3-0 to pace the Lad Tigers to, with Jefferson City: Blair Oaks, a share of second place in the team standings behind champion Brookfield.

Meadville Tournament at Center Stage in County Hoops This Week

Host girls entered off four 90-points contests in succession While it figures to be nothing more than a showcase for the phenomenon which is the host school’s 2022-23 girls’ team, the annual Meadville Invitational high school basketball tournament is ongoing this week, headed toward Saturday evening championship games, weather permitting. As the event began Monday, MHS’ Lady Eagles stood not only unbeaten at 17-0 after demolishing Mendon: Northwestern last Friday night, but also unchallenged by any Class 1 opponents thus far this season, the size of foes which populate the tourney’s field.
