Visiting Salisbury Too Much for BHS Basketball

BROOKFIELD — Although the girls’ game was close at halftime and still within reach going to the final quarter, Brookfield High School’s basketball squads were swept at home by Salisbury a week ago last night in the first of consecutive home doubleheaders against Lewis and Clark Conference competition. The visiting Lady Panthers expanded an 18-14 advantage at intermission into a 37-28 margin after three quarters and then more than doubled the Lady Bulldogs in the final frame to prevail going away, 52-35.

OUTDOORS: Archery Deer Harvest Lowest in Four Years

Bitterly-cold December temperatures apparently kept many deer huntersoutofthewoodslongenough to lower the 2022-23 archery season’s number of deer checked in to 56,525, the lowest number checked in in the last four years. The total deer bow kills had been above 60,000 deer per season since 2019-20, including a record harvest of 67,180 in 2020-21.

Host BHS Takes Tough Court Tussles Over Marceline

While the coveted prize of the schools’ historic “Bell Game” gridiron rivalry wasn’t at stake when Brookfield and Marceline’s high school basketball teams locked horns at BHS last Thursday, both contests were there for the taking by either side and ultimately turned on one player in each game repeatedly “ringing the bell” at a pivotal point. With host Brookfield wearing a slight favorite’s mantle in each contest, based on their performances to date in 2022-23, the tight contests were decided by single-digit margins and ultimately landed in the “wins” column of BHS’ Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

High school seniors from Missouri and five other states now have a chance to receive one of 10 college scholarships worth $1,000. Registration is open now through April 28, 2023. Parents are also now able to register their student. High school seniors or their parents may register for the ISL Midwest Senior Scholarship at www.IowaStudentLoan. Lending will award $1,000 scholarships to 10 students whose names are randomly drawn after the registration period. There are no financial need, grade point average or class rank requirements. The ISL Midwest Senior Scholarship can be used at any eligible institution in the United States. Registered participants also receive emails highlighting financial literacy tips, such as the importance of early career and college planning and ways to reduce student loan indebtedness.

Marceline’s Sportsman, Weese, D. Griffin, Dauber Tourney Champs

BROOKFIELD — A quartet of Marceline High School wrestlers came away from last weekend’s Brookfield-hosted tournaments with individual titles. In last Friday’s BHS Girls’ Invitational, Maddie Dauber faced and pinned three opponents to capture the 100-pounds division, Payton Weese bested five 135-pounds foes – all within the first period, and Molly Sportsman went 3-0 to pace the Lad Tigers to, with Jefferson City: Blair Oaks, a share of second place in the team standings behind champion Brookfield.

Meadville Tournament at Center Stage in County Hoops This Week

Host girls entered off four 90-points contests in succession While it figures to be nothing more than a showcase for the phenomenon which is the host school’s 2022-23 girls’ team, the annual Meadville Invitational high school basketball tournament is ongoing this week, headed toward Saturday evening championship games, weather permitting. As the event began Monday, MHS’ Lady Eagles stood not only unbeaten at 17-0 after demolishing Mendon: Northwestern last Friday night, but also unchallenged by any Class 1 opponents thus far this season, the size of foes which populate the tourney’s field.

Last week started promisingly for Marceline High School’s basketball teams when the Lady Tigers recovered from a slow offensive start at Harrisburg to chase down the Lady Bulldogs and win, 54-51, in Lewis and Clark Conference road action a week ago last night. MHS’ hoops fortunes spiraled downward from there the rest of the week, however.

Brookfield Girls Claim Round One, Milan Cage Crown

MILAN — With a little extra besides bragging rights at stake this time, Brookfield High School’s basketball Lady Bulldogs out-dueled the Marceline Lady Tigers 44-36 last Saturday in the championship game of the 63rd-annual Milan Invitational tournament, earning BHS’ first tourney crown in just over six years. Brookfield High School’s wrestling Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs continue to thrive this past week, winning their “king of the county” home match with Marceline last Tuesday and subduing Gallatin and the host teams at Chillicothe two nights later before the boys decisively claimed the crown of the Sam Martin Invitational tournament at Plattsburg.
