MHS’ Gillman To Play For Iowa Small College This Fall

2021-22 Marceline High School senior Sam Gillman, second from right, earlier this month signed to play football on scholarship at Mount Vernon, Iowa’s, Cornell College next school year. Gillman was a 2-ways starter for the 2021 Class 1 state runnerup MHS Tigers, playing primarily as a wide receiver and defensive back his senior year. Statistically, he caught 19 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns, while, on defense, he made 39 unassisted tackles with two pass interceptions – one in the state-championship game loss to East Buchanan – and two fumble recoveries. As a junior, he was used extensively as a “wildcat-formation” quarterback, as well, carrying for 257 yards (5.7 yards per carry average) and four scores, while catching 36 passes for 383 yards and four more touchdowns. Defensively, he intercepted four passes and recovered a fumble as an 11th grader and was in on 32 tackles. On hand for the early-April signing at MHS were, from right, his mother Chretian, father Jerod, and sister Avery. (PHOTO SUPPLIED/Mark Ross)
