While the scene was shifted, the story played out very similarly last Thursday when Marceline and Brookfield teams met in high school baseball for only the second time ever. With MHS’ right-handed pitcher Wyatt Molloy having out-dueled BHS righty Bryson Collier at Brookfield’s Rusk Park field last May in a 2-0 Tigers win in which both hurlers threw dominating, complete games, the same duo toed the rubber at Marceline’s Walt Disney Memorial Park field April 7 and, while neither went the route this time, delivered superb hill efforts in a game Marceline won again, this time 2-1 on the strength of Hunter Quinn’s 2-runs home run in the bottom of the third inning.
The high school baseball season for the smaller schools in or overlapping Linn County picked up a little steam last week. Meadville finally got a second game in last Thursday and posted a second victory, besting visiting Gilman City/ North Daviess 7-3.
When (or if, weather permitting) Marceline’s and Brookfield’s high school baseball teams – both programs still in their infancies – met for the second time ever Thursday evening on Marceline’s Disney Park Field, the winner was assured of having reached the .500 mark overall at this still-early point of the season.
Two Missouri state records for largest fish were broken just three days apart in mid-March this year. Even though Missouri has some pretty big fish in the state record book, the records continue to be replaced by even-bigger ones.
On a different day at a different site, Marceline High School’s golf boys produced a different outcome when they crossed paths with Kirksville again Tuesday. After losing to KHS by 10 strokes at Macon March 28, the MHS squad – led by Lance O’Dell’s excellent 40 – flipped their previous double-digits loss to KHS’ version of Tigers into a slightly-larger double-digits triumph, prevailing 179-193 at the La Plata Municipal Golf Course.
The early part of the past week brought more wet weather, negating a scheduled high school baseball clash between two Linn County schools. Linn County R-1 was to have hosted Meadville Tuesday, but the rain that arrived in the late afternoon caused that to be called off during the second inning.
