Most County Schools’ Baseball Teams Hope To Start Play This Week

If the weather cooperates late this week, all Linn County or adjoining high schools except Marceline and Linn County will get spring sports competition for 2022 underway. Marceline doesn’t have its first competition in track and field, baseball or golf slated until next Monday, March 21, when the track-and-field squads are slated to participate in an “open” meet (unlimited entries) at Macon.

Marceline Scholar Bowl Results

Carter Vandeloecht (left) earned first team Lewis and Clark All-Conference and All-Tournament honors this season. He was the second leading scorer in both the regular season and conference tournament. Rhea Krumpelman (right) earned Second Team All-Tournament honors at this weekend’s LCC Tournament. The Marceline Tigers Scholar Bowl team went 2-1 at the tournament, finishing fifth. The team was the third seed going into the event.

Senate Bill 40 Holds Talent Show

Linn County Senate Bill 40 staff and workers put on their annual talent show, for the Brookfield community on March 11 at the Brookfield Park Baptist Church. The entertainment consisted of Brittney Spears, Village People, cheerleaders, dance numbers and special guest Elvis. The crowd cheered and clapped during the performances.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Found In Missouri Wild Birds

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has confirmed that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in an American white pelican in Clay County, Mo. Confirmation came from the National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa. Additionally, the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab has confirmed positive birds from Pettis, Randolph, and St. Charles counties.

2021-22 BHS Basketball In-Team Honors Accorded

At last week’s winter sports athletics banquet/recognition program, Brookfield High School varsity basketball head coaches Ronnie Sharp and Carey Davison recognized their team members, briefly recapped their 2021-22 seasons, and announced the recipients of multiple in-team awards for each squad. For the Lady Bulldogs, from left, junior Tori Trentham was chosen for the “Sixth Girl” award, freshman Greenlee McCollum as “Best Offensively Player,” junior Darcy Izard as “Best Defensive Player.” Sophomore Maddie Wilbeck, a second-team all-Clarence Cannon Conference selection, received the “Bulldog Award” and ninth grader Gracyn Beckman was cited as the “Most Improved” Lady Bulldog. Among the Bulldogs, also from left, senior Bryson Collier was selected “Most Valuable Player,” freshman Matthew Holt “Most Improved Player,” and junior Owen Boley as “Defensive Player of the Year.” Sophomore Hank Parks was given the ”Bring Your Best” Award and senior Mitchell Day, who missed most or all of his sophomore and junior seasons with injuries, coach Davison noted, was presented the “Bulldog Award.” (Paul Sturm/LCL PHOTO)

Thanks To Lockout, New Pact, Royals, Cardinals Will Open At Home

The unfortunate dispute between Major League Baseball and the players’ association which delayed the start of spring training and the regular season did create a fluky and unprecedented scheduling scenario for the Kansas City Royals and, contrary to the original schedule, allows both of Missouri’s big league teams to play their season openers at home.
