John M Perry, 93 of Kansas City and formerly of Brookfield, passed away January 10, 2022 at the St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, MO.
Johnny Mc Perry, son of Joseph Benjamin Perry and Eunice Bell McDuffee Perry, was born October 22, 1928 in Shelby County, MO. John’s mother passed away in 1934 leaving John’s father and three young children. His father married Alta Collett with whom he had three more children. Together they raised their six children on the family farm near Leonard, Missouri.
John attended the University of Missouri for 8 years and received an animal husbandry degree and veterinary medicine doctorate. John was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity, Ag Club, and Brock and Bridle where he won the Little International competition. Alumni service included Jefferson Club Board of Trustee, MASA, and decades of football and basketball game faithful attendance. His college years were interrupted by serving two years as an Army 2nd Lieutenant in Germany.
On August 3, 1952 John married Charlotte Taylor in Shelbina, MO. They lived in Columbia, MO during the first years of their marriage. Upon completion of vet school, they moved to Brookfield in 1959 where they raised four children. John was a member of the Brookfield First Christian Church where he served on the Board of Elders, Board Chair, and was honored as Elder Emeritus. He was affectionately called “Doc Perry” as he practiced veterinary medicine for 32 years. He was a member of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, North Central Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, Missouri State Board of Veterinary Examinations, and was a past president of the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association and Missouri Simmental Association. He was named Missouri Veterinarian of the year in 1974. John was inducted into the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association Hall of Fame and Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame. John was a member of the Brookfield Elks Lodge, Brookfield Rotary Club, and served on numerous other boards, agencies, chapters, and associations in Brookfield, and across Linn County and Missouri. Charlotte preceded John in death on March 26, 1990.
On July 20, 1991 John married Joan Caldwell Allison in Marceline, MO. They made their home in Brookfield where both remained active in retirement with social, volunteer, and church activities, grandkids, and travels. Joan preceded him in death on April 30, 2020.
In recent years John enjoyed spending time with his family and playing bridge. John was a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather with a ready story and smile.
John is survived by his children, Jean Eggerman and Leslie of Brookfield, MO; Janet Herdman and Jim of Kansas City, MO; Julie Davis and Tom of Overland Park, KS; and Joe Perry and Chuck Hitzeman of Kansas City, MO; one brother, George Perry of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren, Kevin Eggerman and Erin, Katie Blount and Lucas, Anna Davis and Cory Perry, Andy Herdman and fiancée Makala Johnson, Taylor Monley and Corey, Olivia Perry, Ella Perry, and Jack Perry, five great grandchildren, Zane Blackburn, Aiden Blackburn, Sydney Blackburn, Lyra Perry, and Charlotte Blount; three stepchildren John Ed Allison and Julia Miller, Jeff Allison and Jim Lomax, Susan Mayers and Ronnie; six step grandchildren Deirdre, Melanie, JR, Erin, Mason, and Grahm, and numerous other cherished relatives and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Charlotte and Joan, stepson Scott, two brothers Bob and Pete, and two sisters Elaine Harvey and Carol Hammond.
There will be a private funeral service. The family welcomes friends and extended family to join the service through a live Facebook broadcast at 11:00 am. Saturday, January 22, 2022, on the Brookfield First Christian Church Facebook page. Services are under the direction of the Rhodes Funeral Home, Brookfield, MO.
